The government introduced this scheme to make low-emission and zero-emission vehicles more affordable for the citizens of NZ. The Clean Car Discount offers fees and rebates for eligible vehicles registered in New Zealand for the first time.
What is New Zealand Clean Car Rebate?
This initiative encourages people to purchase more zero and low-emission vehicles. The rebates or fees on the newly registered vehicles are applied on the basis of their CO2 emission levels.
This scheme also applies to used vehicles that are brought to NZ. If they have high CO2 emission levels, a higher fee will be applied to them. On the contrary, if a vehicle is registered in NZ for the first time (eligible vehicle) that has a low CO2 emission level, the vehicle will be eligible for a rebate.
The fee is raised on a higher CO2 emission vehicle due to increased economic & environmental costs imposed by that vehicle. This can help people to divert their attention towards zero and low-emission vehicles, as they can get high rebates on them.
Therefore, lower CO2 emission means that the rebates will be higher. In contrast, higher CO2 emission means more fees. The complete information on the Clean Car Rebate and other relevant aspects can be learned through the authorized website of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
In case the funds for the rebates run out in the future, the rebates will be stopped. After this, the government will restart the rebate scheme, and only the vehicles meeting the eligibility requirements from the restart date will get rebates.
Who Qualifies for Clean Car Rebate?
Vehicles might get a rebate if they emit below 100 CO2 grams/km. Previously, this threshold was set at 146 g CO2/km. The rebate is given only to the first individual registered to the vehicle. The rebate is not given to the first individual who is either registered as a lessee of the vehicle or is a registered vehicle trader.
However, the lessee and the registered motor vehicle traders can be eligible if they meet certain conditions. Furthermore, the rebate payments made to the public authorities do not include any GST.
Vehicle Eligibility: Only vehicles meeting certain criteria are eligible for a rebate.
- Registered in NZ for the first time.
- The cost of the vehicle is less than 80,000 dollars (including GST + purchase price).
- The vehicle should have a safety rating of 3 or more stars at the time of registration. (ratings on the Rightcar website).
