Employees in Nova Scoria must be happy to hear the news that the government has increased the minimum wage to $15 per hour from $ 14.50 per hour on October 1, 2024. This is the second time the minimum wage was increased in 2024. Before that, on 1st April 2024, the minimum wage was increased to $14.50 per hour.

The minimum wage, as you may know, is the lowest wage that an employer must pay to its employees in Nova Scotia. However, it depends upon the employer’s wish to pay more to their employees. The minimum wage varies from the province, and every province’s minimum wage rate is covered by its employment standard legislation. It should be noted that those employees engaged in federally regulated industries like banks, railways, postal services and more are entitled to receive the federal minimum wage.

Every year on April 1, this rate is modified by the estimated annual Consumer Price Index for Canada, rounded to the nearest $0.05, and expressed as a percentage change. If a weekly wage is specified, the monthly wage is calculated as 4.33 times that amount. If an hourly rate is specified, it is calculated as 4.33 times the weekly average.

Minimum Wage in Nova Scotia

The minimum wage orders are classified into three orders:

Logging and Forest Operations $15

Note: A monthly rate for the workers who have no definite work week it whose working hours are unverifiable is set at $2162. Also, the minimum wage rates are the same for the adult workers.

  • The minimum wage review committee is responsible for conducting an annual review of the minimum wages in Nova Scotia.
  • The minimum wage rate will be adjusted annually on April 1 by the anticipated yearly national CPI percentage change for the last calendar year plus a supplemental one per cent.
  • The average number of workers in Nova Scotia who worked for minimum wage during the last year, that is, from April 2021 to March 2022, is near about 7% of the workers in the province, which is almost 28,500 workers.

NS Minimum Wage Rules for Employees Called into Work

If any employees work outside the regular work hours, the employer must pay at least three hours of work at the minimum wage rate, no matter whether he worked less than three hours. That means the minimum age paid to the worker will be $43.50 ($14.50 x 3 hours). But if the worker has been paid more than the minimum wage, the amount of overtime work will be the same.

Employers in Nova Scotia use a piecework arrangement when they pay workers based on the quantity produced rather than the number of hours worked. According to the general minimum wage order, businesses are prohibited from paying pieceworkers less than they would have been paid for the equivalent number of hours worked at the minimum wage. This restriction only applies to farm workers whose duties directly involve picking fruit, vegetables, and tobacco.

Deductions associated with board and lodging

Employers are eligible to deduct the below-listed amounts for board and lodging from the minimum wage in Nova Scotia:

  • For both board and lodging every seven days: $68.20
  • For Lodging per week: $15.45
  • For Board per week:  $55.55
  • For a single meal: $3.65

Employees Excluded from the NS Minimum Wage 2024

Although the rule applies to the entire province, there are some exceptions.

  • Those receiving any kind of training under government-sponsored and approved plans are excluded from the rule.
  • Insurance agents
  • Specific Farm employees
  • People engaged in real estate and car salespeople
  • Workers working on fishing boat
  • Athletes engaged in their athletic initiative
  • Domestic service employees engaged in a private home and working 24 hours or less per week.
  • Employees give personal care to an immediate family member and are working as a householder.
  • Employees engaged in fishing boats, Logging Forest Operations and Construction and Property Maintenance are excluded from the rules.
  • Those working at a non-profit playground or summer camp
  • Commissioned sales employee working outside the employer’s premises.
