Canada Child Benefit
Canada Child Benefit or CCB is aimed at supporting eligible families and individuals having children under 18 years of age by providing financial assistance. The person who is applying for the CCB should be the primarily responsible person for caring for the child.
Applicants can apply for the CCB if –
- Their child is born/starts living with them
- They/their spouse start to meet the eligibility conditions for receiving CCB.
In addition, applicants can apply for the CCB by either of these –
- Automated Benefits Application
- My Account -> Apply for Child Benefits
- Form RC66
Applicants applying through the My Account or by sending Form RC66 must also include the child’s birth proof – if the child was born outside of Canada or the Child was born in Canada and is aged 1 year or older. In addition, the application should also check the list of supporting documents and attach them if applicable. This will help the CRA to minimize the delays in the processing of applications.
Canada Child Benefit Eligibility
The eligibility for Canada Child Benefit is as follows –
- The child should be under 18 years of age, and the individuals applying for the CCB must live with the child.
- Applicants should be primarily responsible for the Child, i.e., caring, upbringing, etc.
- Should be a resident of Canada.
In case the applicants are in a shared custody arrangement and the child does not live with them all the time, they can also apply for the Canada Child benefits. The child in shared custody of the child lives alternatively with each parent from 40% to 60% of the time. In this case, each parent will receive 50% of what they could have gotten if the child was living with them 100% of the time.
Canada Child Benefit Amount
The Canada Child Benefit Amount is generally calculated on the basis of AFNI and the number of eligible children. In order to keep on receiving the CCB payments, individuals and their spouses must file tax returns every year.

The Canada Child Benefit Amount (for each child) is –
- $7,437 yearly or $619.75 monthly. (child under the age of 6)
- $6,275 yearly or $522.91 monthly. (child aged 6 to 17)
Moreover, these CCB Amounts start reducing when the AFNI goes over $34,863. For example, if a family has one eligible child and their AFNI is between $34,863 and $75,537, the reduction in payment will be 7%. And if their AFNI exceeds $75,537, the reduction will be $2,847 plus 3.2% of AFNI greater than $75,537. The reduction percentage and amount vary with the number of children and AFNI limit.
Canada Child Benefit Extra Payment
Eligible applicants can receive an extra payment in their Canada Child Benefit Payment if they have applied for Child disability benefits. If the child under 18 years is eligible for DTC, the applicant becomes eligible to receive Child Disability Payment for that child. For this, the CRA approves Form T2201 for the eligible child.
The CDB benefits are $261.41 per month ($3,173 per year) for each child. Similar to the CCB, the benefits of the CDB also reduce when the AFNI exceeds the limit set by the CRA. If the families have one eligible child for the DTC and their AFNI is more than $75,537, the reduction will be 3.2%.
