How do you know if you qualify for Child Support Grant?

To qualify for the Child Support Grant, you must be the primary caregiver of the child, basically a teenager. You can either be a parent or a grandparent of the child. Kindly note that if in case you are not the parent of the child, then you need to provide evidence that you are the main caretaker of the child.

The documents such as the letter from the school’s principal, social worker’s report, affidavit from the parent, and confirmation from police officials have to be submitted to the concerned authorities.

  • You need to have citizenship of South Africa or a permanent residency.
  • If you are single, your income should not be more than R52 800 per year.
  • For married citizens, the combined income should equal or below R105 600 per year.
  • The child’s age needs to be less than 18 years. The child needs to live with the main caretaker. Both the child and caregiver must live in South Africa.

If a citizen completes this criterion, then he/she can further apply for the program.

How Much is the Child Support Grant in South Africa?

The SASSA will pay you R510 monthly for a particular child. And the top-up is R500 + R250. The SASSA will pay the amount to you through one of the following ways:

  • You can collect cash from a particular pay point on the given date
  • Deposit into your Postbank account or into your bank (bank may include charges).
  • Through an administration institution of the grant

If you cannot collect the amount yourself, you can give power of attorney to someone who will collect the amount on your behalf.

Application Process of South Africa: Child Support Grant

To apply, you need to fill out an application form at your closest SASSA Office or visit the Regional Office device point. The best thing about this program is that there are no fee charges.

Verification of the application form will be finalized in the presence of the SASSA officer. You will be given a receipt after the completion of the application. The applicants must keep a copy of the application form for reference.

Documents and information required for application:

  1. Your South African ID (must be bar-coded).
  2. Birth certificate of the child (must have an ID number).
  3. Your salary slip, pension slips, three-month bank statement, or any other income proof.
  4. If you don’t have any employment, provide your Unemployment Insurance Fund card or relieving letter from your last employer.
  5. If the child is not yours, you’ll need on paper permission from the child’s parent or guardian.
  6. If the child is not yours, you need to provide information about how you tried to get the child’s parents to pay the maintenance.
  7. You must provide information showing that you are the child’s primary caretaker.

  • October 3, 2024 – For older persons.
  • October 4, 2024 – For people living with disabilities.
  • October 5, 2024 – For children’s grants categories.
