The country has been facing the highest concentration of carbon emissions in the air. The concentration of CO2 has been around 415 parts per million, which is the highest in the last 1 decade. The emission has been due to over usage of the vehicle and the not repairing them on time to reduce this emission, the authorities have announced the Clean Car Rebate. The program was implemented in 2023 to accelerate climate change and achieve a carbon-neutral environment by 2025.
The eligible vehicles registered up to 31st December 2023, are subjected to Clean car fees and rebates. The rebate encourages to purchase of electric or low-emission vehicles. The rebate is available for the light battery electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle. The system is also applied to the vehicles that are imported to the country. The fees of CCD have been increased due to higher economic and environmental causes.

Clean Car Rebate Eligibility 2024
The eligibility of the vehicle depends upon the emission of the CO2 and the registration of the vehicle. The vehicles emitting the CO2 in the range of 100 grams/km are eligible to receive the amount. The threshold limit of the emission has been increased to 146 grams/km. The rebate is issued to the first register of the vehicle only. The families owning second-hand vehicles are not eligible for the rebate.
The vehicle should be registered with CCD before 31st December 2023. The lease and the registered motor vehicles are eligible for the rebate. The cost of the vehicle should be less than 80,000 dollars this includes the GST and the purchase price. Only the registered vehicles are applicable for the rebate. The dealers and the business assets are not included in the rebate. the vehicle should have a safety rating of 3 or more stars.
How to Claim Clean Car Rebate?
The citizens can apply for the rebate once the car has been registered and have the number plate assigned to them. The amount will be paid only to the account of the registered owners’ number. The application form is available on the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency website. the documents that are required for the rebate are discussed below:
- The registration papers.
- The number plate papers if the number is not yet issued.
- The bank details.
- A copy of the vehicle sale agreement.
- The vehicle emission papers.
- The GST number if the vehicle is used for business.
The candidates have to fill out all the required details in the application form. The registered motor company also needs to apply for the statutory declaration. The owner needs to apply for the lease agreement paper also.

Vehicles with an emission rate of 0 to 100 grams/km are eligible to receive the amount. The cars with emissions above 101 to 149 grams/km will neither receive the rebate nor the CCD fees. The fees will be applicable for vehicles above 149 grams/km. However, the rate of the rebate is different for the new cars and the used cars. Clean Car Rebate Date 2024
The fees payable for the car rebate scene are the capital interest. The payment will be disbursed according to the registration in the scheme. The application form has been available on the portal since 31st December 2023, the candidates should apply for the rebate at the earliest.
The verification process will take quite a long time as there are many applicants for the rebate. After the successful verification, the amount will be disbursed within 2 months. The citizens can expect the amount to be disbursed by March 2024.
