To celebrate 75 glorious years of Indian Independence (AZADI ka AMRIT MAHOTSAV), the Income-tax Department, Gujarat has organized series of events. As a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration, to celebrate spirit of Kheda Satyagraha, the Income Tax Department organized a cyclothon on 17.12.2021 under leadership of PCCIT Gujarat, Shri. Ravindra Kumar. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri. Bhupendra Bhai Patel flagged off the cyclothon in ahmedabad and Sh.Anshuman Gaekwad and Sh.Munaf Patel, former International cricketers also graced the occasion in Vadodara. More than 250 cyclists along with 500 guests participated in cycle rally and cycled from Income tax office Vejalpur to Income tax Office Kheda (total covered distance 62 Kms). Another team of 100 cyclists joined from Baroda office to Nadiad. Income tax office, Navsari also organized a Cycle rally from Navsari to Dandi.
Cyclothon 2021 was planned to commemorate the KHEDA SATYAGRAHA by cycling down the route trodden by the revered Satyagrahis in the year 1918 (from Ahmedabad to Nadiad, in Kheda district). The KHEDA SATYAGRAHA was a watershed in the Indian freedom struggle where the peasants of Kheda district rose in peaceful revolt against a repressive tax regime in the backdrop of famine. They pledged not to pay taxes to the British Government and to face all the possible consequences of such non-payment. The resolute Gujarati ryots stood their ground firmly and non-violently, in the face of arrest and confiscation of property. The Government was left with no option but to give in to their demands, suspend the regressive revenue assessment for the coming year, release the political prisoners and return the seized properties.
Cyclothon 2021 also drive home the message that in the 75 years of independence, India has successfully built a taxation system based on transparency, voluntary compliance and enhanced tax payer services. Taxes collected are utilized for the progress of our country & welfare of our people.
To encourage the participation of our younger generation in celebrating Azadi ka AMRIT MAHOTSAV, Income-tax Department, Gujarat had organized essay writing competition for school children in the age group of 10-15 years on the topic “Kheda Satyagraha- its significance in India’s Independence Movement”. All AMC affiliated schools of Ahmedabad were requested to take part. Entries were called for in three languages – Gujarati, Hindi and English. Competition has received an enthusiastic response from the young participants. Three best essays in each language will be awarded and all the participants will be given certificates for participation on 26th January 2022.
The idea behind this initiative was to inspire children to research and learn more about the contribution of Kheda Satyagraha to our freedom struggle. The larger purpose was to instill a sense of pride in our history and also to understand the role of taxes in nation-building. After all, wisdom lies in “catching them young”.
